What is RAM?
RAM (random-access memory) is your device's short-term working memory. It holds the apps and data you're actively using so the processor can reach them instantly. It's fast but temporary — switch off the power and it clears. More RAM lets you run more things smoothly at once.

Key things to understand
- 1The device's fast, short-term working memory.
- 2Holds what you're actively using right now.
- 3Much faster than storage (disk/SSD).
- 4Clears when powered off; more = smoother multitasking.
Frequently asked questions
- What's the difference between RAM and storage?
- RAM is temporary working memory the processor uses live; storage (SSD/disk) keeps your files permanently but is far slower.
- Does more RAM make a device faster?
- It helps you run more apps at once without slowdown; beyond what you need, extra RAM gives little benefit.
- Why does RAM clear when I switch off?
- It's volatile memory — it needs power to hold data, so it empties on shutdown.
